Bawumia lauds MTN for constructing girls dormitory

Tamale Senior High SchoolThe Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described as laudable, the construction of a 600-bed capacity Girls Dormitory by MTN Foundation for the Tamale Senior High School.

According to him, MTN has helped to solve one of the most critical needs of the School, which is infrastructure.

Acknowledging other State and Corporate Organizations that contributed to the development of Tamasco at the launch of its 70th Anniversary in Tamale, Dr. Bawumia noted that when he presented a proposal to MTN to consider the construction of the dormitory, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, the Company instantly expressed interest in the project.

He added that MTN responded to his proposal by admitting that, they want to help enhance the education of the girl-child.

“Even though I have been calling Selorm over the years at odd times to check on the progress of work, he never got tired of telling me that the project will be completed,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The Vice President thanked the Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Selorm Adadevoh, the MTN Foundation, and MTN adding that Tamasco owes them a debt of gratitude.

He appealed to other corporate bodies to complement the government’s efforts in ensuring a future for the youth.

Dr. Bawumia said he had received a request by the School to support the rehabilitation of three faculties at an estimated cost of GHC867, 230.00.

He also used the opportunity to thank the School for naming a dormitory after him.

Dr. Bawumia donated GHC200,000 and announced a donation of 100 street lights from the Deputy Energy Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam who is an old student.

Again, a donation of GHC150,000 was made to the School by the President and Chief Executive Officer of Geodrill, Dave Harper.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Selorm Adadevoh said MTN Ghana is happy to be commissioning the Girls’ Dormitory at a time when the Company is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.

He said the project will no doubt change the lives of many young Ghanaian girls in the region.

Tamale Senior High School“It is my hope that at MTN’s next milestone of 50 years, a lot of young women will stand up to read testimonies of how this Girls’ Dormitory brought hope into their lives by providing the environment that helped them to achieve their academic and professional ambitions,” he added.

Mr. Adadevoh said the construction of the block is a destiny-changing activity led by a proactive headmaster and the leadership of the Vice President.

He said their determination to make a difference in the communities they serve continues earnestly with a focus on education, health, and economic empowerment.

Mr. Adadevoh said they have empowered many Ghanaians to migrate to using the power of technology, provided support to enable education to continue from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that Ghanaians will continue to see MTN’s Corporate Social Investments in many more communities.

He said after a year and a half, MTN is happy to hand over the fully furnished 600-bed capacity Girls Dormitory and an adjoining bungalow for the House Mistress built at a cost of GHC2.8 million to the School.

Mr. Adadevoh said MTN Foundation invested in the project because they believe young girls deserve a safe environment to study and to have the opportunity for a decent education.

He said the benefits of the investment cannot be underestimated and would undoubtedly help groom the next generation of female leaders in the country, noting that they look forward to unlocking the potentials of the girls.

The CEO said MTN has invested in 87 major educational projects in 25 years.
“As far back as 2002, SCANCOM had already set up a scholarship scheme which is now being handled by MTN. This scholarship scheme has provided assistance to hundreds of brilliant but needy students, including students of Tamasco,” he said.

The CEO concluded that MTN has also invested in several ultra-modern ICT centres and libraries.

Mr. Adadevoh further hinted about the building of a robotic laboratory in the region.
