Didier Drogba, a football icon known for his clutch performances, especially in high-stakes matches, had unique pre-match rituals that reflected his focus and determination.
According to Ashley Cole, one of his most peculiar habits was an untouchable pair of boots—no teammate dared to lay a hand on them. Drogba’s dedication to maintaining his routine might have contributed to his aura of invincibility, particularly during finals where he consistently delivered decisive moments for Chelsea.
Ashley Cole speaking during an episode of Football’s Greatest, a podcast on YouTube, where he discussed what it was like to have Drogba as a teammate, said:
“He was possessed. He had these rituals in the dressing room after the kit man laid out the equipment.”
“I have seen him lose it a little bit because his boots are not stretched and put in the hot water properly for the right amount of time. He doesn’t like it.”
“His boots were always at last,” Cole added.
Ashley Cole spent six years playing alongside the Ivorian international at Chelsea. Cole joined the Blues in 2006, two years after Drogba arrived from Olympique Marseille.
This meticulous preparation wasn’t just superstition—it underscored Drogba’s ability to mentally and physically prime himself for the game’s demands.
His ability to deliver under pressure, particularly in decisive matches, was legendary. From scoring the iconic Champions League final equalizer to converting the winning penalty in 2012, Drogba’s rituals were part of his winning formula.
Cole described their shared success: one Premier League title, multiple FA Cups, and the unforgettable Champions League triumph. Drogba left the club in 2012 after achieving this historic milestone, while Cole stayed until 2014. Their combined legacy remains a highlight of Chelsea’s history.
