Politics may often be described as a “dirty game,” but former Miss Botswana Lesego Chombo is redefining that narrative. At just 26 years old, the beauty queen-turned-attorney has transitioned from the world of glamour to governance, earning a place as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Botswana’s new administration.
Chombo was appointed as a specially elected MP by Botswana’s newly elected president, Duma Boko. This unique position is reserved for individuals nominated by political party leaders and endorsed by parliament. Chombo’s selection reflects a forward-thinking vision for leadership in Botswana.
“I believe my experiences, qualifications as an attorney, and achievements as Miss World Africa and Miss Botswana qualify me for this role,” Chombo stated. “If not now, then when? I’m eager to learn and grow as we work toward building a new Botswana.”
Chombo’s appointment is part of a progressive shift in Botswana’s political landscape. She is one of six nominees approved by parliament and one of three women chosen to serve. Her dedication to empowering marginalized communities through the Lesego Chombo Foundation and her legal expertise uniquely position her to advocate for change.
Her foundation focuses on uplifting vulnerable populations, while her digital platform, Law Talks, simplifies legal concepts for ordinary citizens, empowering them with knowledge and confidence to navigate legal challenges.
From Beauty Queen to Global Role Model
Chombo’s journey began on the pageant stage when she won the title of Miss Botswana in 2022. Her reign continued as she earned the title of Miss World Africa 2024 after securing a top-four finish at Miss World 2023 in Mumbai, India. Competing against 111 global contenders, Chombo showcased the depth of talent and leadership emerging from Botswana.
