Newly-elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr Divine Otoo Agorhom has said Flagstaff house (now Jubilee House) played an instrumental role monetarily in his victory over the weekend as party regional chairman.
Mr Divine Otoo Agorhom over the weekend beat Mr Alfred Boye and Archibold Cobbina to become the ruling partyâs Greater Accra Regional Chairman. He polled 276 votes as against 269 votes for Alfred Boye and 66 votes for Archibold Cobbina.
Appearing on CitiFMâs Point Blank on Monday, victorious Divine Otoo Agorhom, responding to Umaru Sanda Amaduâs question: âAre you the Flagstaff house candidateâ, responded, âYes, Yes!âŠâ
Asked âif he enjoyed Flagstaff House supportâ, he replied: âYes. I did⊠Yes ⊠They supported me. Yes. I had support from them⊠They called me and encouraged me⊠They gave me money.â He revealed.
Asked if âtheyâ really gave him money, he said, âYes, they gave me moneyâ.
âYou mean Flagstaff House gave you money?â, Umaru Sanda Amadu asked again. âThey gave me money, yeahâ, came the response.
He was however quick to add that âEven if they gave me one cedi itâs still money.â
When asked how much money he received, he laughed, replying thus: âYou asked a question if the Flagstaff house now Jubilee house supported me, my answer is yes. The money may have come from individual contribution ⊠I mean whatever it is. I have support from Jubilee House.â
Questioned by the Host whether it is lawful for a political party to be supported with government funds, he had a response ready:
âMy party is in government, okay. So those there, the individual members there at Jubilee house, the staff are members of the NPP so if I go with my bowl and do silver collection it is from themâ, he explained.
He revealed he had no idea of how much he spent in total on the campaign and was yet to have a meeting with his campaign finance director, but indicated aside feeding and posters, on the election day, he paid each of the over 544 delegates from 32 constituencies GHC 100 as transportation.
Noteworthy, however, is the fact that at the tail end of the program, he said âI financed 90% from my pocket. I am a businessman. I financed the campaignâ.
The Camps
Prior to the NPPâs Greater Accra Delegates election, Ken Agyapong, outspoken NPP Member of Parliament had accused Lord Commey and Asenso Boakye of using their âJubilee house influenceâ to promote candidates against his (Ken Agyapongâs) preferred choice of âArchibold and his teamâ.
According to him, he supports Archibold because he has been âvisibly helpfulâ to the party during the 2016 elections, embarking on late-night operations to block the NDCâs rigging machinery leading to President Akufo-Addoâs victory.
NPP Members of Parliament in the Greater Accra Region also threw their support for Alfred Boye.
But the NPPâs Greater Accra Regional elections which came off over the weekend saw Mr Divine Otoo Agorhom, the âJubilee House candidateâ emerging vicotorious against the Accra NPP MPsâ choice of Alfred Boye who polled 269 votes and the Kennedy Agyapongâs anointed candidate Archibold Cobbina managing 66 votes.
