Ghanaian boxer and winner of IBO lightweight belt set to defend his title in a January 27 bout in Accra.
Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe claimed the vacant IBO lightweight belt following a 12-round unanimous decision win over South Africa’s Mzonke Fana in an Accra bout two years ago and it’s finally time to defend his title at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Tagoe, aka Game Boy took on a new opponent called Fernando David Saucedo after his team cancelled Argenis Mendez deal last year following his health condition.
IBO World champions are allotted nine months to defend their title against an opponent in their top 35. Tagoe and Mendez were originally slated to fight on August 26th. The bout was subsequently moved to September 2nd. That date was postponed due to a Tagoe injury, according to Baby Jet Promotions.
Under the auspices of Baby Jet Promotions and partners, the IBO Lightweight champion Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe will finally face Argentina’s Fernando Saucedo in a 200,000 dollars staged bout on Saturday, January 27.
Tagoe, though talented, is unproven on the world stage. His finest victory to date occurred last December; a title-winning, unanimous decision over a 43-year-old, faded version of South Africa’s Mzonke Fana.
This bout will be Game Boy’s first fight after defeating South Africa’s Mzonke Fana in December 2016 at the aforementioned venue and having gone for whole year break without a fight.
The Pound for Pound boxer was ruled out of the sport for several months after battling injury last year (2017), however, he has fully recovered and ready to fight anyone who wants his title and even looks forward to winning more titles in future.Speaking to the media at a press conference in Accra Tuesday, the Chief Executive Officer of Baby Jet Promotions, Samuel Anim Addo reiterated that the duel would come at a high cost to them and called on the corporate world to support them ahead of the fight themed ‘Defend to Glory’.
“This bout would cost us more than $200,000. An amount we don’t enjoy mentioning because of its weight but as we speak we have to buy air tickets for the match officials, opponents and his team who are about eleven in number. The opponent is coming from South America, so the ticket is ranging from $3,000, the other Officials are from Europe and one from South Africa,” he said.
“The Mayor has promised to support us among other prominent people who have interest in pushing Ghana boxing to the next level”
“After working on Emmanuel Tagoe, we’ve learnt a lot and will sign other boxers to Baby Jet promotions”
“We needed Game Boy to reach a certain height so we could use his experience to groom other upcoming boxers and so far we are ready to list our new faces in the coming weeks,” he wrapped.
Fernando Saucedo would arrive in Ghana on January 21 ahead of the mega fight.
