A wanted suspect in the attempted murder case of Florence Wanjiku surrendered to the police in the wee hours of Monday, November 25.
The male adult identified as Elias Mutugi Njeru, who is also a a church’s treasurer, availed himself at the Nakuru Police Station in the company of his lawyer.
According to the police, the suspect was immediately taken into custody pending further processing as the police concluded investigations into the case.
“Today 25/11/2024, one Elias Mutugi Njeru male adult and a suspect in the attempted murder case of Florence Wanjiku Gichohi reported at Menengai Police Station surrendered at Nakuru Police Station in the company of his lawyer Gakuhi Chege and Associates Advocates,” the National Police Service noted in a statement.
“He has been re-arrested by police and placed in custody while appearing fit, pending collection by Menengai Police Station.”
On November 22, a report of attempted murder against Wanjiku was made at Kiamunyi Police Post in Nakuru after she was found with several stab wounds and severed hands.
Preliminary investigations established that the victim was attacked by her lover who is also her business associate at a real estate firm in Nairobi.
The incident happened at their rental house in Nakuru City following domestic wrangles which escalated and ended up in violence. Following the incident, Florence was rushed to hospital while in a serious condition.
The woman and her lover enjoyed a peaceful relationship culminating in investing and opening a business together. However, over time, the relationship started turning sour.
The suspect, a businessman and a senior leader at a Nairobi-based church had been on the run for three days after allegedly attacking his lover and stabbing her 18 times including chopping her fingers off
Earlier, the police issued an arrest notice to the suspect asking him to present himself at the nearest police station or police officer.
The church where the suspect is said to have been a leader distanced itself from the matter while calling on the security agencies to hasten investigations and bring the suspect to book.
This was just another case of gender-based violence attacks that have hit the country in a recent spike in the wave of femicide cases.
According to the latest statistics shared by the National Police Service, there was a slight increase in femicide cases in the last three months with 97 women murdered in the period.
