Former Asante Kotoko forward Joseph Amoako has been freed from a two-year jail sentence in Sweden for rape when it was revealed that he had been wrongfully convicted.
Derrick D. Thompson, Amoako’s agent, verified the news of his client’s release on March 8, 2023.
Amoako was charged with raping a 16-year-old Swedish girl in December 2022 and condemned by the Helsingborg district court, which concluded that he committed the offense without the girl’s permission.
As a result, he was suspended by Swedish club Helsingborgs IF in October 2022, and his contract was terminated after he was held on probable grounds of rape. Initially, two African Helsingborgs IF players were being investigated, but one was freed following interrogation, leaving Amoako as the lone suspect, who was ultimately jailed.
Following appeals, however, it was determined that the girl had lied about the event, resulting in Amoako’s release.
“They just released him yesterday from the prison after the appeal was made. The case was fake, the girl was lying. Upon appeal, Amoako has been released. It was all a fake story from the girl so he is now a free man,” Derrick D Thompson revealed.
Amoako, his family, and his fans were all relieved by the news. The player is set to return to Ghana shortly to restart his career.
