Springbok Speedster Edwill van der Merwe Joins the Sharks After Lions Exit
Springbok Star Edwill van der Merwe Joins the Sharks in Major Transfer Move
Springbok winger Edwill van der Merwe has officially joined the Sharks, the coastal franchise confirmed on Monday.
Van der Merwe, who has been with the Lions since 2021, opted not to renew his contract with the Johannesburg-based side, instead making a move to Durban.
The 28-year-old winger, who started his professional career with the Stormers, has built a reputation as one of the most dangerous finishers in South African rugby.

His international debut for the Springboks came in 2024 against Wales at Twickenham, where he scored a sensational solo try and earned the Man of the Match award in South Africa’s 41-13 victory.
During his time with the Lions, Van der Merwe scored 30 tries in 67 matches, proving to be a consistent attacking threat.
What This Move Means for the Sharks
Van der Merwe’s arrival bolsters the Sharks’ backline, adding explosive pace, agility, and finishing ability on the wing.
The Sharks have been rebuilding their squad after a disappointing United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign, and this signing signals their intent to compete at the highest level.
With his experience, attacking flair, and try-scoring ability, Van der Merwe is expected to play a key role in the Sharks’ plans going forward.
