Kiambu County Fires Bursary Officials in Mystery Shake-Up
Bursary Fund Drama: Four Officials Sacked, Replaced Immediately
The Kiambu County Government has dismissed four Ward Education Bursary Committee members in yet another abrupt reshuffle, fueling speculation over the reasons behind their removal.
A Gazette notice dated March 24, 2025, signed by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Mercy Njagi, announced the revocation of their appointments, though no specific reasons were provided for their dismissal.
The dismissed officials include:
- Immaculate Wanja Mang’ere – Chairperson, Muguga Ward
- Peter Kanja Kimani – Chairperson, Uthiru Ward
- Jane Njeri Makumi – Member, Uthiru Ward
- Mariticron Wangui – Member, Ikunu Ward
Immediate Replacements Appointed
The county wasted no time in appointing new officials, also revealed in the same gazette notice. The newly appointed committee members include:
- Nelson Njenga Githinji – Chairperson, Muguga Ward
- Loise Njoki Maina – Chairperson, Kijabe Ward
- Joseph Njuguna Wanjiru – Chairperson, Uthiru Ward
- Esther Nyambura Nyutu – Member, Ikunu Ward
- Beatrice Wambura Muchiri – Member, Uthiru Ward
While no official reason has been given, similar shake-ups in government often stem from allegations of mismanagement, corruption, incompetence, or political restructuring. The Kiambu County Bursary Fund, a critical financial support system for underprivileged students, has been subject to previous complaints over transparency and allocation of funds.
Dismissals of this nature can occur due to:
- Mismanagement of bursary funds
- Bribery and corruption allegations
- Failure to perform duties
- Reforms within the county government
This marks the second major restructuring in Kiambu County in less than a month. In March, 22 other members of the Ward Education Bursary Committee were dismissed in a similar manner, again with no explanation provided.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has remained silent on the latest dismissals, but he has been vocal about cracking down on corruption and inefficiencies in his administration.
Bigger Trend: Counties Cleaning House?
Kiambu is not alone in government job dismissals. In January 2025, Migori County dismissed over 100 employees, citing performance reviews, lack of valid academic documents, and disciplinary cases.
These mass sackings across counties suggest that governors are tightening control over key county functions, possibly in response to public pressure for accountability and better service delivery.
