Bridging the Digital Divide: IFLA’s Mission to Transform Libraries Worldwide
IFLA Libraries Boosting Connectivity for Millions
Libraries have long been pillars of knowledge and learning, but in today’s digital age, they are also becoming essential hubs for connectivity. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative—‘Libraries Boosting Connectivity’—to assess and enhance the digital capabilities of libraries worldwide.
This ambitious project seeks to map geolocation, connectivity levels, and digital resources available in libraries across various regions. With a pilot phase currently underway, IFLA aims to identify gaps, opportunities, and strategies to improve digital inclusion in underserved communities.
Why This Initiative Matters
With billions of people still lacking reliable internet access, public libraries play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide. They provide free or affordable Wi-Fi, digital literacy programs, and access to online education, job opportunities, and essential services. However, many libraries struggle with insufficient infrastructure, outdated technology, and inconsistent funding.
By collecting comprehensive data, IFLA’s initiative will help:
- Improve Internet Access – Identifying libraries that need better connectivity solutions
- Build Digital Skills – Offering training programs for communities
- Foster Partnerships – Connecting libraries with stakeholders to enhance resources
- Expand Educational Opportunities – Empowering students, professionals, and underserved communities with access to knowledge
Global Impact
The data collected will guide policymakers, educators, and tech innovators in formulating effective strategies to boost digital access through libraries. The final survey results will be published via a dedicated project website in early 2026.
As IFLA prepares for the next phase, more countries will be included, broadening the project’s reach and impact. Libraries, government agencies, and digital inclusion advocates are encouraged to participate by sharing data, insights, and best practices.
How to Get Involved
IFLA invites Ghanaian libraries, researchers, and stakeholders to contribute to the survey and support this transformative project. Those interested in providing bulk data or collaborating can reach out to Maria Debrasdefer at [email protected].
