- The Ghana Commercial bank has assumed control of the UT Bank and Capital Bank.
The Central Bank of Ghana has withdrawn the license of the UT Bank and Capital Bank as a result of the terrible financial situation.
The Bank of Ghana has approved the takeover of Capital Bank and UT Bank by the GCB Bank Ltd.
A statement by the Central Bank stated that it has “approved the Purchase and Assumption transaction with GCB Bank Ltd that transfers all deposits and selected assets of UT Bank Ltd and Capital Bank Ltd to GCB Bank Ltd.”
The statement also added the “Bank of Ghana has revoked the Licenses of UT Bank Ltd and Capital Bank Ltd. This action has become necessary due to severe impairment of their capital. The remaining assets and liabilities will be realised and settled respectively through a receivership process to be undertaken by Messers Vish Ashiagbor and Eric Nana Nipah of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
This license revoking development renders these two banks inability to operate as a commercial bank.
Customers of these two banks have no cause to worry because the operations of these banks will continue to function but under the management of government.
The GCB Bank will henceforth be the managers of these institutions.
The take over of the banks automatically makes all staff and customers of the two banks be rolled over to GCB Bank’s system.
The UT Bank is however expected to be unlisted from the Ghana Stock Exchange.
Below is the press release
